The cost of power generation increased by 66.2% in just one year to Rs9.22 kWh in March 2022 from Rs5.55 kWh in the same month last year.

“On an annual basis, the increase in the cost of fuel is mainly due to the increase in coal, fuel oil, regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG), nuclear and gas production cost,” reads a note. of Arif Habib Limited (AHL) on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the cost of hydel-based power generation fell 2.1% year-on-year.

The power generation mix shows that there was a lower reliance on coal and hydel in March 2022, with residual fuel oil (RFO), nuclear and wind power sources stepping in to fill the gap.

The note shows a fuel cost comparison of March 2022 with the corresponding month of 2021, revealing that the production cost of RLNG increased by 58.5% to Rs14.37 kWh from Rs9.07 kWh. Meanwhile, the production cost of Residual Fuel Oil (RFO) increased by 89% to Rs 22.52 kWh in March 2022 from Rs 11.92 kWh in the same month last year.

In fiscal year 9MF22, power generation also increased by 10.1% year-on-year to 101,699 GWh (15,465 MW), from 92,371 GWh (14,047 MW) in fiscal year 9MF21.

Coal was the main source of electricity generation, representing 24.8% of the generation mix with 2,587 GWh generated in March 2022, compared to 2,734 GWh generated in the same month last year, a decrease of 5.4 %.

Electricity production from RFO increased by 370.5% to reach 1,106 GWh in March 2022, compared to 235 GWh in March 2021. Generation from nuclear sources improved by 66.3% to reach 1 564 GWh in March 2022, compared to 940 GWh generated in March 2021.

In addition, wind generation increased by 58% year-on-year to reach 268 GWh in March 2022.
