One of Ghana’s independent power producers, Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited, has announced plans to expand into Sierra Leone.
The power company plans to deploy 20 MWp to 50 MWp solar PV in Freetown, Sierra Leone within a year.
The company is also planning to build another 160 MW power station which will be known as the Benkongor Hydroelectric Power Plant over the next four years.
The company’s director of business development, Elikplim Apetorgbor, made them known to the media.
He said the total planned investment cost for the two projects is US $ 700 million.
According to him, the deployment of a 20 MWp to 50 MWp solar photovoltaic plant by Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited is needed to increase the power supply to the capital of Serra Leone, Freetown and other parts of the country.
Mr. Apetorgbor further noted that the deployment will complement the power supply for future construction of the 160 MW Benkongor hydropower plant in four years.
He also explained that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Energy representing the government of Sierra Leone on the one hand and Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited after a meeting with experts from the Ministry of Energy and other stakeholders on March 29, 2021.
