Peaks in electricity demand during the June heat wave; ERCOT says electricity supply will meet demand

HOUSTON – A triple-digit heat wave in the state of Texas pushed electricity consumption to a record high over the weekend.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) said the state’s power grid continues to hold up without any interruptions, but potential blackouts and blackouts are what many Houstonians continue to fear.

“There are concerns because in our area we have already started experiencing power outages and getting emails (that the) power is out,” Houstonian Estella Navarro explained.

EROCT said electricity demand topped 74.9 GW on Sunday, beating the previous record of 74.8 GW in August 2019.

Electricity demand on Monday peaked at 74.5 GW, with demand slowly declining.

For cocktails, KPRC 2 officials expect enough production to meet high demand this week, but Dr. Ramanan Krishnamoorti, director of energy at the University of Houston, said we still need to prepare for blackouts.

“We should always be concerned because our energy production and our energy demand are quite closely in sync. We don’t have a lot of room for error, and that’s the challenge we have – is that the margin of error is extremely small,” explained Dr. Krishnamoorti.

Dr. Krishnamoorti added that as long as there are no serious disruptions like a loss of wind or solar power or a devastating storm, the Texas grid should hold its own.

“Even though it takes more than one event to get us into trouble, we hope multiple events won’t happen in a short time. Let’s hope and pray that this is where we stay because we all know what the disadvantages of power outages,” says Dr Krishnamoorti.

ERCOT released the following statement:

“ERCOT recorded a record peak electrical demand on Sunday, June 12, 2022, of 74,917 MW, beating the previous all-time peak of 74,820 MW that occurred on Thursday, August 22, 2019. Current weather and load forecasts call for a record-setting hot weather across the state throughout this week. ERCOT anticipates sufficient production to meet the high demand. ERCOT is committed to keeping the Texans we serve informed if conditions change.
