To make energy available for pumping, we could set up solar power generation facilities near these reservoirs which will provide the energy needed during the day (off-peak period) to pump water from the lower reservoir. to the upper tank.

Since a different energy source is used for pumping, the term hybrid pumped storage system is used. During the day, solar panels would generate the energy needed to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir.

The same water would then be released to generate power to increase the power supply to the grid to meet the demand for the two daily peaks; morning peak from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and evening peak from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Indeed, in one of my previous articles on flood mitigation in the Kashmir Valley, I had suggested the construction of a series of small dams or cascading reservoirs on the main rivers as well as on their tributaries which could ensure flood moderation.

These same cascade reservoirs could be appropriately designed to also serve as reservoirs for pumped storage. In fact, these reservoirs would be like multi-purpose systems in that they would help with flood moderation, sediment control and at the same time increase our electricity production, especially during times of peak demand.

In addition, the area around them could be developed into recreational and tourist places.
