The scientific production association LUCH (part of Science and Innovations JSC, R&D unit of Rosatom State Corporation, Russian nuclear major) has signed an agreement to supply thermocouples for four power units of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant (KNPP) in India.

New sensors designed for thermal control of nuclear power plant process equipment will replace old ones in the internal control systems of KNPP Units 1 and 2 reactors.

High-precision resistance thermocouples are an essential part of the control system in the reactor, their stable operation ensures safe operation of nuclear reactor equipment. These thermocouples are primary temperature measuring transducers designed to measure the temperature of the coolant in the “hot” and “cold” chains of the main circulation line under conditions of external influencing factors.

In total, the company will supply 200 units of resistance thermocouples labeled TSPT 5963. This modification is characterized by high stability of operation and has metrological characteristics at the level of leading world manufacturers.

LUCH has launched the production of a wide range of thermocouples with different measurement capacities depending on the material used to make the sensors and the housing. Thermocouples are produced in stainless steel housings with fixing and sealing units, with polyamide or metal heads, as well as with flexible extension cables,” according to Konstantin Kabachny, chief metrologist of the company.

LUCH Scientific Production Association (Research Institute Scientific Production Association LUCH joint-stock company, part of the R&D unit of Rosatom State Corporation) is involved in the development of promising fuels for various types of nuclear power plants. The entity also has unique experience in the creation of high-temperature ceramic and metallic materials, including those in the monocrystalline state, and in the design of key elements of power plants based on them.

Key competencies include dense nuclear fuel fabrication, ceramic nuclear fuel production, electrovacuum devices and current sources, large laser optics and adaptive optical systems; processing of non-irradiated nuclear materials; creation of instrumentation for nuclear facilities (resistance thermometers, thermocouples, flowmeters, level gauges, etc.); At the same time, LUCH contributes to the creation of hydrogen production plants.

ROSATOM is the only company in the world with the resources and skills to offer energy solutions throughout the nuclear supply chain. It has a wide range of assets, including assets in the design, construction and operation of nuclear power plants, uranium mining, conversion and enrichment, nuclear fuel supply, decommissioning, storage and transportation of spent fuel and safe disposal of nuclear waste.

Rosatom is also engaged in the production of equipment and isotopic products for the needs of nuclear medicine, scientific research and materials science, the production of digital products and various nuclear and non-nuclear innovative products.

The company’s strategy is to develop low-carbon electricity production projects, including wind power. Today, the company brings together more than 300 companies and organizations and more than 250,000 employees.
