British maritime and technology innovation company CORE POWER demonstrated on Wednesday July 13 that a single installation of a floating nuclear power plant design could produce 100% green ammonia, at a cost that could compete with low sulfur bunker fuels and carbon taxes.

The the design of a floating nuclear power plant is associated with an “ammonia refinery” at either end of the green corridors, which are proposed in the Clydebank Declaration, signed at COP26 late last year.

“Making green ammonia from 100% clean hydrogen and nitrogen is very energy intensive and requires low-cost, reliable electricity, and the production of fuels must take place where we need it and when we have it. need,” said Dr. Rory Megginson, chief analytics officer at CORE. POWER in London.

At CORE POWER’s customer program launch event on July 13, the company demonstrated how a single facility in the US Gulf could produce 1.3 million metric tons (mt) of 100% green ammonia , at a cost that could rival low-sulphur bunker fuel oil. and carbon taxes. The company is a pioneer in the development of the market for new marine nuclear technologies.

“Placing a floating refinery at each end of a ‘green corridor’, in the United States Gulf and the British mainland, would provide a reliable, low-cost fuel supply to all ships trading on that route and leave a lot of green hydrogen-based fuel to supply inland and coastal markets,” said Dr Megginson.

The design of the CORE POWER is characterized by a cylindrical “spar type” hull 90 meters in diameter equipped with four molten salt reactors, producing 1,200 MW of electricity 24 hours a day, whatever the weather.

“The main advantage of the molten salt reactor for this purpose is that we can refuel at full power, so we don’t have to stop to refuel, and that means we can operate for a very long time at maximum capacity. ,” said Giulio Gennaro, Technical Director of CORE POWER.

“The MSR is an ambient pressure reactor that cannot pollute the environment in the event of a mishap or accident, and it’s popular. The lack of pressure also means that the emergency planning zone around the facility must be confined to the boundary of the ‘site’ or the hull itself,” Gennaro said.

Showing how a reliable power solution could be built over the next decade, CORE POWER also demonstrated how offshore wind can power the system when the conditions are right.

“Combining intermittent offshore wind power generation with reliable floating nuclear means the billions spent on renewables can deliver on its promise and shake its heavy reliance on fossil fuels on calm or stormy days,” Megginson concludes.
