PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS ARE RETURNED TO VARIABLE RATE ELECTRICITY AND LOSE ACCESS TO 100% RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY

ROCHESTER, NY, June 17, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The Joule Assets (Joule) Program Administrator confirms that as of June 15, 2022, Monroe Community Power and Gateway Community Power electricity supply customers have been diverted to Rochester Gas & Electric’s (RG&E) default electricity supply service following actions taken by the grid operator , the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO). Customers will no longer be served by their community choice aggregation (“CCA” or “community choice”) program, Monroe/Gateway Community Power. The programs are made up of residents and small businesses in the City of Brighton, the City of Canandaigua, and Victor’s Village. By switching back to RG&E, customers are also switching back to a variable electricity rate – the amount residents pay per kWh will change each month. Electricity will also no longer be 100% renewable.

Residents will not experience any interruption of service. However, the transition to RG&E occurred in the middle of most customer billing cycles. Customers can therefore receive a single bill for electricity consumed before the transition, the community electricity rate of $0.0492 per kWh (4.92 cents/kWh) – and a bill for electricity consumed after the transition – the June RG&E tariff of approximately $0.08 per kWh (8 cents/kWh). This ensures that customers will maximize their savings by participating in their CCA program. RG&E will send letters and place robocalls to further inform participants of the change.

Before the transfer and since the programs launched in January 2021participants had collectively saved more than $1.5 million via the CCA fixed electricity supply tariff provided by Icon. In addition to cost savings, CCA 100% NYS Renewable Sourcing has significantly reduced the community’s carbon footprint and advanced New York State’s clean energy goals. These benefits are largely due to the support of municipal leaders pioneering these renewable electricity programs in the region. With this phase of the programs ending six months ahead of schedule, Joule is working with city leaders to deliver new clean energy offerings in the near future.

The early return of RG&E participants was due to Icon Energy (dba Source Power Company) failing to make required payments to the grid operator, NYISO. According to the NYISO website: “The NYISO, by correspondence dated June 9, 2022, Icon declared by default…. for failure to timely make any payment due to NYISO. Icon remains in default under NYISO tariffs.”

Icon said the default is related to a billing and credit issue with RG&E. Although Icon can no longer provide low fixed rate renewable electricity supply, Icon said it intends to continue operating its statewide solar offering.

CEO of Joule Jessica Stromback says, “At Joule, we are proud to administer the Monroe and Gateway Community Power programs. While we regret the premature end of this offer, together city leaders not only reduced the carbon footprint of their communities, but saved residents and small businesses. $1.5 million on electricity costs at a time of historic inflation. We look forward to the next steps, all working together to fight climate change and promote environmental justice in the region. »
