LAHORE: An improvement in power generation on Friday led to an increase in the quota of Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) to overcome load shedding in the city, sources said.
As a result, the sources said, the duration of load shedding was reduced to one to two hours in urban areas from seven to eight hours a day earlier. Also, they said, load shedding in rural areas dropped to four to five hours after Lesco’s power supply improved.
According to available data, National Power Construction Corporation (NPCC) was supplying 3,300 megawatts of electricity to Lesco against a current demand of 3,600 megawatts, leaving the system with a total deficit of 300 megawatts.
The main reason for the demand was the rise in temperature in the city, which reached 36 degrees Celsius and is expected to reach 40°C by April 10. It should be noted that Lesco has made special arrangements to deal with power supply issues during the holy month of Ramazan, which is likely to start from April 3.
It may be noted that the Lesco had faced a shortage of 1000mw a day earlier due to reported failures at nuclear power plants. Thus, the duration of load shedding in the province had reached 3 to 10 hours, leaving consumers to face the worst electricity supply load shedding at the very beginning of the summer season as well as in the holy month of Ramazan.
Lesco has already powered 50 new feeder lines to overcome issues such as low voltage and tripping during the month of Ramazan, in addition to repairing a 2307 kilometer long transmission line to the 132kv system. Also, felling of trees, replacement of transformers and 11kv lightning arresters, battery banks, faulty disc insulators, relays, jumpers, conductor repair and replacement, washing of disc insulators, installation of import/export meters on the transmission lines, replacement of outgoing panels, identification of faults on transmission lines and transformers and cleanliness of control panels in the control room are some additional steps to ensure uninterrupted power supply to consumers during Ramazan .
