Hyderabad: Heavy rains hit the city on Monday evening. Several places in the city received heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5mm to 114.5mm, according to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS).

TSDPS data showed that Madhapur received the highest rainfall in the city with 102.3mm, followed by Balanagar-76.8mm and Ferozguda-73.8mm. Quthbullapur (71.8mm), Jeedimetla (71.5mm), RC Puram (70mm), UoH (69.8mm), Moosapet (68mm) and Chandanagar (64.5mm) also received heavy rains greater than 64.5 mm.

According to independent weather observers, the northern and eastern districts of Telangana received massive rains overnight.

Ameenapur in Sangareddy recorded the highest rainfall in the state of 124.3mm in the last 24 hours. Several other places in Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Nizamabad, Mancherial, Jagtial etc. received heavy rain.

5-6 hours of power outage

Several locations in the city also witnessed power outages. Some areas of the city suffered power cuts for around 5-6 hours. Balanagar, Ameerpet, Shaikpet and Nizampet also faced long hours of power cuts. Some of the frustrated residents took to Twitter to air their grievances.

“Power outage in Nizampet for about 10pm till now. Power outage just for normal rain. Just wondering if we are in Hyderabad or some village,” Nithin Kumar Basetti tweeted.

“Why every time the charger kicks in sir and there’s a power outage for 5-6 hours. God knows how the electric service works,” Ravindra tweeted.

Most of the roads in the city were also flooded by the rains aggravated by water pipes overflowing on the roadsides with extreme pressure especially at the PVNR Attapur highway in Rajendra Nagar causing problems for pedestrians and vehicles using this road.

Thunderstorms during monsoon showers

Last night’s rains were accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms. Usually, lightning and thunderstorms occur with showers before and after the monsoon.

“The monsoons have just started and there is still a lot of heat in the atmosphere. The monsoon rains during the months of June and September are accompanied by lightning and thunder due to the excess heat on earth,” said explained independent weather observer Mahaboob Khan, commonly known as Weather Brother.

What to look for

Telangana is also expected to receive heavy rain on Tuesday and Wednesday. The IMD issued a yellow alert on June 21 and 22. Light to moderate rain is expected thereafter through June 24, according to IMD’s weekly weather forecast.

T Balaji, known as Telangana Weatherman, also said that good rains, not as heavy as Monday, are expected across the state including Hyderabad on Tuesday evening as well.

“The sky is clearing again all over Telangana, this will again open the door for thunderstorms in Telangana during the afternoon – night Although there will not be huge rains like yesterday, but even today good rains on charts in TS today due to good heat Hyderabad has good chance again for moderate thunderstorms today in the afternoon – overnight it won’t rain too heavily like yesterday, but it will rain today too (sic),” he tweeted.
