One of the most ambitious and globally accepted agreements between the nations of this world was concluded on December 12, 2015 and entered into force on November 4, 2016. The Paris Agreement (or Accord) on Climate Change is a legally binding treaty that enjoins its 196 signatories towards the goal of limiting global warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, although some countries have set 1.5C as a target.

And of course, Australia is party to the goals of the Paris Agreement. It has worked hard to achieve them through the education of its people and government policies that help business and industry meet the global challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is also committed to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol.

Each country must submit its emission reduction commitments known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and Australia has published its first NDC on the UNFCCC Registry as follows:

  • NDC 2015: commitment to reduce emissions by 26-28% below 2005 levels by 2030
  • NDC 2020 update: affirmation of 2030 target, presentation of Australia’s practical and technological approach to reducing emissions, inclusion of new actions and measures since 2015
  • NDC 2021 update: commitment to net zero emissions by 2050, inclusion of ambitious targets for low-emission technologies, affirmation of 2030 target and release of 2021 projection results showing Australia on track on track to exceed this target by up to 9 percentage points

Australia will submit its second NDC to the UNFCCC in 2025.

In 2021, 25% of Australian homes are powered, at least in part, by solar energy, the highest of any country in the world. It has steadily increased over the years and now represents 9% of total electricity production. A huge new renewable energy capacity of 7 gigawatts was installed in 2021, putting the country at the forefront of global renewable energy achievements.

In total, last year more than 27% of the electricity generated in the country came from green energy sources, with wind and solar power on residential and commercial rooftops leading the way. Embracing cleaner, cheaper and more reliable electricity means this will only grow in the future.

Power generation using renewable energy can be unstable, but Cat’s battery solution eliminates the problems, providing consistent stable voltages at the required settings. (The battery system can be part of a fossil fuel power generation solution).

Renewable energy sources are varied and numerous. Wind, solar, biogas and hydrogen fuel cells to name a few. Thanks to these, hybrid renewable energy systems offer many benefits superior to those based on traditional coal or gas power.

The initial costs of installing and configuring a renewable system may seem high, but these costs are amortized over a much longer period than conventionally powered electricity generation systems. Renewable projects and future
