“GaN Systems Cup” Design Competition Launched to Drive Innovation in Power Electronics – EEJournal

OTTAWA, Canada – June 20, 2022 – GaN Systems, the global leader in GaN (gallium nitride) power semiconductors, announced that the 8e The China Power Supply Society (CPSS) annual “GaN System Cup” design competition is underway. Fifty teams from top Chinese universities are selected to participate in the preliminary round of the competition. This year’s competition focuses on driving innovation in high-efficiency, high-power-density photovoltaic single-stage inverters using GaN Systems power transistors.

“The young engineers participating in the GaN Systems Cup are helping to define the future of the power electronics industry, and their focus on next-generation GaN-powered designs will help drive innovation in power conservation. energy, emissions reduction and new energy use,” said Jim Witham, CEO of GaN Systems. “We are thrilled to be part of this important competition for eight consecutive years, and we applaud these engineers as they strive to define the future of power electronics.”

This year’s teams are challenged to create a GaN-based 400V photovoltaic power supply design that uses GaN Systems’ semiconductors to meet the following evaluation criteria:

· Low-cost design with 360 VDC to 400 VDC input voltage, 220 VAC output voltage, and

· Efficiency greater than 93%, power density of 10 W/in³ and ability to operate continuously at 25°C for 30 minutes.

Organized by China Power Supply Society (CPSS) and Hefei University of Technology, more than 160 power electronics teachers, students and practitioners attended the virtual launch ceremony. Professors Ma Mingyao and Zhao Jiwen from Hefei University of Technology, and Dr. Zhang Jinfa, vice president of China Power Supply Society and chairman of the Science Popularization Committee, presided over the ceremony. Paul Wiener, Vice President of Marketing for GaN Systems, discussed the importance of better performing power electronics and the role of GaN technology in driving critical improvements.

Finalists will be announced on August 25 and winners will be recognized at an on-site awards ceremony in November at the CPSS annual conference. Designs will be judged on criteria of design, functionality, ingenuity and quality of presentation. More than 100 colleges and universities have participated in this annual competition since its launch in 2015.

The “GaN Systems Cup” receives support from GaN Systems, Ningbo Xici Electronic Technology Co., Ltd., Zhuhai Taiwei Electronics Co., Ltd., Edex Electronics Co., Ltd. and Minye Science and Technology Information (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.
