Delhi’s electricity demand is expected to increase this winter

NEW DELHI : Anticipating a harsher winter this year, discoms estimated that the national capital’s electricity demand will reach 5,400 MW, exceeding the peak winter demand of the previous two years, officials said.

Delhi’s peak winter power demand last year peaked at 5,021 MW and in 2019 it was 5,343 MW, Discom officials said.

A spokesperson for BSES said winter peak electricity demand in the BRPL and BYPL areas reached 2,091 MW and 1,107 MW, respectively, during the past winter. This year, it is expected to reach 2,315 MW and 1,140 MW for BRPL and BYPL respectively.

Accurate demand (load) forecasting is essential for a reliable power supply. It is done on different parameters such as day-ahead, intraday and medium term (from fifteen days to one year).

Among other aspects, weather parameters such as temperature, precipitation, cloud cover, wind speed and direction, and humidity play an important role in accurate forecasting of demand, officials said.

Ensuring reliable power in all seasons is as much a function of proper electrical arrangements as it is of accurate forecasting of demand and a robust distribution network.

On all these aspects, BSES discoms are fully suited to ensure adequate electrical availability for its approximately 46 lakhs of consumers during the winter months, said the spokesperson for BSES.

The backbone of BSES’s power supply agreements during the winter months includes long-term agreements with power plants, including Delhi-based hydroelectric and gas-fired power plants, he said. .

In addition, BSES also receives over 440 MW of solar power from SECI, 250 MW of wind power and approximately 25 MW of waste into power generation. In addition, it is also helped by more than 118 MW of solar panels installed on the rooftops of South, West, East and Central Delhi, he added.

A spokesperson for Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) said the nightclub has made arrangements of up to 200 MW beyond expected peak demand.

The nightclub also uses a mix of smart technologies such as machine learning and AI for better load prediction to ensure reliable power supply to its consumers, he said.

The company’s battery-based energy storage systems in Rohini and Rani Bagh will also help provide continuous and reliable power to major consumers during any requirement in the months to come, the spokesperson added.
