Circle Power Renewables Continues to Lobby for Houghton County Wind Farm

ADAMS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) – Since 2018, Circle Power Renewables, based in Royal Oak, has been trying to install a wind farm in Adams Township.

“Electricity prices in this region are extraordinarily high,” said CEO Jordan Roberts. “So we thought this was a great place to locate a very inexpensive renewable energy source. “

The $ 80 million to $ 100 million project would be on private woodland and consist of twelve 400-foot turbines.

Last year, the Department of the Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) turned down the project due to concerns for wildlife. So the company did some research.

“We did 1,000 hours of on-site wildlife surveys,” said Roberts. “The impacts are expected to be minimal. We are working alongside Us Fish and Wildlife {Service} to put in place this conservation plan and the EGLE conservation plan. These will be in place and approved by US Fish and Wildlife before construction begins. “

Despite opposition, Circle Power promised the project would have minimal impact on residents due to the remoteness of homes and said it would bring substantial economic benefits.

“The project will generate approximately $ 16 million in property taxes that will go to Adams Township, Adams Township schools and the county for services such as roads and veterans,” said Roberts.

Circle Power says tall trees in the area would also limit the visibility of wind turbines. As for energy costs, Roberts says they would go down.

“Part of your bill is power,” he explained. “The Michigan Public Service Commission and others believe your procurement costs will be lower with this project than they otherwise would be.”

Next step of the project: obtain a local building and operating permit. Circle Power hopes to have the conservation plan in place this year. If they are approved, they want to start installing turbines in 2023 or 2024.
