Furious over the contaminated water supply and erratic power cuts, local residents approached the office of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP for Rajinder Kaur Chhina South Constituency on Sunday, demanding an immediate solution to their problems .
Residents of Ramnagar, New Azad Nagar, Prem Nagar, Satguru Nagar, New Sunder Nagar and Lohara gathered to protest the lack of basic amenities in their areas.
They said that for nearly a month they have been living in pathetic conditions due to contaminated water and an inconsistent power supply.
The protesters said the majority of them are factory workers and after a hard day’s work when they return home they have to struggle to fetch drinking water and at night the electrical power in the area that remains cut off. Their children fall ill and their repeated complaints go untreated.
Sandeep Shukla, a protester, said people voted the AAP into power thinking their lives would change, but it turned from bad to worse.
Another resident, Neelam, said that due to poor sanitation, cases of mosquito bites have also increased.
Meena Devi, another protester, claimed that electricity harms children’s education.
Later in the day, MP Chhina visited the protesting residents and assured them that all their grievances would be addressed, noting that the problem occurred in illegal settlements and migrant settlements.
