First reactor vessel installed at Rooppur nuclear power plant

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday inaugurated the installation work by videoconference from his official residence in Ganabhaban.

“We will join the world nuclear powers, but for peace,” said the Prime Minister.

“This will ensure the production of electricity, which will reach rural populations and improve their socio-economic condition. “

The Rooppur Power Plant Project is implemented by the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and is being built with technical and financial support from Russia.

Reactor pressure vessels are thick steel containers that hold nuclear fuel when reactors are in operation. Ships are one of the many barriers that keep radioactive material out of the environment. Electricity will be generated from the uranium inside the ship, which will generate electricity. It functions as the lifeline of nuclear power plants.

The reactor pressure vessel reached the port of Mongla from Russia in October last year. It is installed in accordance with the policy and standards of the International Atomic Energy Association.

The project will soon be completed once the reactor is installed, a project official said. At least 50 percent of the first unit will be made this year.

The government hopes to meet the deadline for the completion of the first unit of the $ 12.65 billion project and provide electricity to the national grid by 2023. The second unit will be opened the following year. The two-unit megaproject is under construction on 1,062 acres.

In 2017, Hasina inaugurated the construction of the main concrete structure of the nuclear furnace, with construction starting in July of the following year.

A total of 8,000 people, including 1,800 Russians and other foreign nationals, are working on the project.

The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission signed a contract on December 25, 2015 with Atomstroyexport JSC, an engineering company of the Russian company Rosatom, for the implementation of the project.

Third-generation technology of a five-layer protection system is used in the construction of the plant, according to the government. Bangladesh has also signed a contract with Russia to withdraw used nuclear fuel.
