5 ways Cisco improves the energy efficiency of its products

Sustainability means protecting the Earth’s resources and ensuring a livable planet, not just today, but for generations to come. An inclusive future, with promise and opportunity for all, must emphasize sustainability and take environmental impacts into account.

One of Cisco’s top priorities is to continue to improve the performance of our products while maintaining or decreasing their power consumption. This allows us to tackle our largest source of emissions, make our products more competitive, help our customers save energy costs, reduce global energy demand and meet regulatory requirements.

To reduce the GHG emissions associated with the use of our products, we must achieve “energy scalability” – products that provide energy-efficient service for varying traffic types, traffic demands, customer usage and installations. To do this, we are investing in five areas that will have the greatest impact on improving the energy consumption of our products:

Able: We are improving the efficiency of our products from plug to port, guided by our product energy efficiency goal set in fiscal year 2018. To meet this challenge, we continue to explore ways to reduce the overall resistance of our components through the use of more conductive materials. , and we continue to investigate and adapt high-efficiency conversion technologies to improve overall system-level efficiency.

Cooling: Cisco innovates to improve the way we cool our products. Commonly used forced air cooling systems have limitations in cooling more powerful next-generation products. As such, we are exploring alternative cooling methods (airflow, liquid, and refrigerant cooling) and continue to optimize algorithms to reduce power.

High-speed interconnects and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs): Thanks to advances in optics, we can deliver increased bandwidth using the same or less power. These improvements allow us to deliver significantly higher performance while maintaining or reducing power consumption. Silicon One, our next-generation silicon design, provides more than twice the network bandwidth in a single ASIC than any other routing silicon, increasing our capacity from gigabytes per second to terabytes per second.

Customer facilities: We work with our customers to reduce the amount of energy needed to run their IT facilities. The new power solutions increase overhead power efficiency, avoid step-down transformers, and provide integrated cooling strategies. These end-to-end solutions reduce hardware requirements and power consumption while providing a more integrated method of managing IT infrastructures.

Power source: Power supplies play an essential role in managing the energy efficiency of products. We strive to offer more energy-efficient power options. For example, we have offered customers the option of Platinum or Titanium 80 Plus power supplies wherever possible.
